Frequent consumption of chicken eggs may not pose health risks even to those people who are advised to refrain from them.

As informs Health, in progress research scientists compared the blood parameters of people who follow a diet with a high content of enriched eggs and those who had a diet that excluded the consumption of eggs.

Study participants ate enriched eggs. These are foods that have more nutrients than regular eggs, such as vitamin D, B2, 5 and 12, as well as omega-3 acids. This composition is achieved thanks to the special nutrition of the birds.

All study participants people over 50 who previously had cardiovascular disease or other risk factors. Almost a quarter of them were diabetic.

The scientists compared the blood level at the start of the study and four months after its completion. The results showed that the levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein – the so-called “good” cholesterol) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein – the “bad” cholesterol) in both groups did not change much.

Other research, which involved 140 participants, had similar results. One part of its participants consumed more than 12 enriched eggs per week, and the other – no more than two.

However, experts call for caution in evaluating research results. Although they demonstrated a slight relationship between egg consumption and cholesterol levels, it should be considered that heart health is affected by diet as a whole.

“Heart disease is not caused by one product, but by the entire diet and the total amount of saturated fat.” says Marta Gulati, MD, professor of cardiology and director of preventive cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
