Dragoman Prize announced the best translator of Ukrainian literature abroad

Laureate of the Drahomán Prize-2022, which is awarded every year, starting from 2020 translators from the Ukrainian language into the languages of the world, became Iryna Dmytryshyn.
The name of the award winner was announced September 26 during the solemn ceremony, which took place in the Polish city of Gdansk in cooperation with the project.
Iryna Dmytryshyn – translator from Ukrainian into French, author of numerous publications on Ukrainian literature and history. Responsible for Ukrainian studies at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations in Paris, manages projects aimed at promoting Ukraine, its culture and history in Western Europe. She was nominated for the award with a French translation of Serhiy Zhadan’s novel “Boarding”.
“I love, respect and admire all the authors whom I have translated. But I am extremely glad that I received the award specifically for “Internat” by Serhiy Zhadan. This is one of those iconic works that represents Ukraine and allows foreigners to try to understand what is happening in our country , why and how we should get out of this. And we will get out, because, according to the same Zhadan, tomorrow we will wake up one day closer to our victory.” – she said Iryna Dmytryshyn.
This is Dmytryshyn’s second nomination for the Dragoman Prize. Last year, she was among the top three finalists with the translation of “Lexicon of Intimate Cities” by Yury Andruhovich.
The Consul of Ukraine in Gdansk presented the award to the laureate Oleksandr Plodisty. She was the host of the evening in Gdansk Maria Gurskaand the musical accompaniment of the ceremony was provided by a Ukrainian musician and composer Proud Old Man.
On behalf of the mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz spoke Andrzej StelmashevichHead of the Culture and Promotion Commission of the City of Gdansk.
“Gdansk is a city that has long been an ally of free Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Gdansk has received 100,000 Ukrainians. We are aware that the war continues, and until it ends, we will show solidarity, brotherhood and sisterhood with Ukraine,” he said Andrzej Stelmashevich.
Drahomán Prize laureate Iryna Dmytryshyn received a statuette made by a Ukrainian sculptor Anna Zvyagintsevaand monetary reward in the amount 3,000 euros. Dmytryshyn expressed her desire to divide her financial award into three parts and hand it over Serhiy Zhadan on his initiative to support Ukraine, the project Kult.Podcast about culture, literature and philosophy of literary studies Tatyana Ogarkova and philosopher Volodymyr Yermolenkoas well as on the initiatives and projects of the Ukrainian PEN.
During the ceremony, it was also noted Giovanna Brogi (Italy) – translator from Ukrainian into Italian, researcher of the literature of Central and Eastern Europe. She received a special award from the Chapter for her special contribution to the translation and promotion of Ukrainian literature, as well as to the development of Ukrainian studies in Italy.
“I would like to express my deep gratitude to the jury for honoring my Ukrainian studies. Ukraine has a very complex history and culture, so I decided to devote most of my time to it over the past 30 years. I am glad that my articles and books have made a small contribution to so that the world knows more about the past and the present“, said Broji’s speech, which was read from the stage by the host of the evening.
Also during the ceremony, the executive director of the Ukrainian PEN Tatiana Teren mentioned the names of seven Ukrainian translators who died defending the country since February 2022 – Denys Antipov, Yevhen Gulevich, Ilya Chernylevsky, Oleg Klyufas, Kostyantyn Starovytskyi, Serhii Zaikovskyi, Oleksandr Kislyuk.
This year, a translator from Ukrainian to English competed for the Dragoman Prize in the finals Marko Andreychyk (nominated with a translation of the novel Volodymyr Rafeyenko “Mondegrin. Songs about death and love”) and a translator from Ukrainian to Bulgarian Raina Hristova Kamberova (nominated with a translation of the novel Lyubka Deresha “Cult”).

The Drahomán Prize was founded in 2020 by the Ukrainian Institute, the Ukrainian PEN and the Ukrainian Book Institute. The award is intended to support and recognize the cooperative work of translators from the Ukrainian language into the languages of the world. The Drahomán Prize is awarded for high translation skills and contribution to the promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad.
