On January 27, 6 people, including 5 children, were poisoned by carbon monoxide in private houses.

The incidents occurred in the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, the State Emergency Service reports.

According to rescuers, poisoning was recorded in the village of Torfyane in the Kyiv region. The leak of carbon monoxide probably occurred due to violations of the rules for the use of furnace heating.

As a result, two children aged 10 and 12 were injured, according to the State Emergency Service. They were admitted to the hospital in a moderate condition.

In Chernihiv Oblast, a case of poisoning occurred in the village of Varva due to a violation of the rules for operating a gas boiler.

Four people were injured, including three children aged 14, 12 and 1.

All were taken to the hospital in a moderate condition, rescuers add.

The State Emergency Service reminded about how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. For this:

  • do not leave switched on gas appliances unattended;
  • do not operate a generator or any gasoline engine within 6 meters of windows, doors or vents;
  • regularly check the serviceability of gas equipment, ventilation channels and chimneys;
  • when using stoves or a fireplace, always open the damper;
  • do not install an electric hood and a gas column in the same room.

The State Emergency Service also recommends more frequent ventilation of rooms with gas appliances. If possible, you can install a carbon monoxide detector – this is a device for determining its concentration in the air.

If you notice signs of a carbon monoxide leak and a person who has probably been poisoned by it, you should:

  • turn off all devices, except electrical ones;
  • open the windows, in a room where, potentially, there may be a high concentration of carbon monoxide.

The State Emergency Service adds that it is necessary to leave such a room and remove or carry out all the victims from there. Call the medics by number 103.

Also:

  • put a pillow or a roll of clothes under the victim’s head;
  • unbutton the victim’s clothing to facilitate breathing.

“The best help for carbon monoxide poisoning in a medical setting is long-term oxygen inhalation”said the rescuers.

Earlier, we reported that in Odesa, three girls were poisoned by carbon monoxide from a generator.
