A petition has appeared on the website of the President of Ukraine with the demand to preserve the nature of the Svidovets mountain massif from construction and felling of trees. The author of the petition, the communicator of the Ukrainian Nature Protection Group, Tetyana Shamnia, proposes to create a reserve of national significance “Free Svidovets”. “Svydovets is a mountain massif in the Transcarpathian region, one of the most beautiful places in the Ukrainian Carpathians. These are primeval forests, high mountain meadows, glacial lakes and rivers. This is a place where bears, lynxes and dozens of other rare animals and plants protected by the Red Book still remain of Ukraine and at least four international conventions,” the petition says. However, according to environmentalists, in 2016 there was a project to build a ski resort of the same name on Svidovka. Pyramids of Svidovets. That is, a monster resort with an area of almost 3,000 hectares, designed for more than 50,000 people at the same time, may emerge. A whole city instead of the untouched nature of the Carpathians! ” – emphasizes the author of the petition. According to her, the ecological consequences of the construction of the “monster resort” can be significant – it threatens mudflows, soil erosion, droughts and floods. The petition also states that the ancient forests in Svidovka are under threat of being cut down for the resort or for harvesting wood. “For almost 7 years, my colleagues have been fighting in the courts against the destruction of the Svidovets mountain massif in the Carpathians for the sake of a huge resort. The petition, which provides for the creation of a nature reserve, gives hope that all this can be avoided,” writes Tetyana Shamina on her Facebook page. We will remind, environmentalists discovered that 4 hectares of Carpathian forests are cut down every hour in eight countries.
