Portugal has passed a law allowing euthanasia for people who are terminally ill and in unbearable suffering. The exception is those who are mentally incapable of making such a decision, France24 reports. The president has a week to announce the new law. According to Portuguese media, it may come into effect by the fall. The law will apply only to citizens and legal residents of the country who have reached the age of 18. The Portuguese Parliament has approved the euthanasia bill four times in the last three years. But every time it was returned to the consideration of the constitution due to the opposition of the president. The final version of the law was adopted on May 12. The question of allowing euthanasia divided Catholic Portugal into different camps. There is still an ongoing debate in the country about medically assisted death. “The adoption of this law was relatively quick compared to other major countries,” said Paulo Santos, a member of the euthanasia advocacy group. He warned that many doctors may oppose this bill. As a reminder, Spain legalized euthanasia in 2021 and became the fourth EU country to do so.
