Even more “sure”: what is known about the damage to the sculpture in Stryi Park

An investigation into the act of vandalism – damage to the work of a modern Ukrainian sculptor – is ongoing in Lviv. The other day, unknown persons damaged the sculpture “Confident” by Vasyl Korchovoy, which was installed in Stryi Park for the annual Sculpture Week. The female figure was doused with a mixture of oils and probably tried to set it on fire. Investigators are investigating the circumstances of the crime, but have not disclosed the details yet. The curator of Sculpture Week, gallerist Pavlo Gudimov, told about this in a comment on UP.Zhyttya. “Yesterday, I went to see the police colonel who is in charge of the investigation. He came to the park the same time again, there were investigators. I understand that they still have some evidence. Now they are not commenting on anything, because the investigation is ongoing.” says Pavlo Gudimov. The curator also noted that the police responded immediately after a visitor to the park noticed the damaged sculpture and contacted the law enforcement officers on the evening of August 22. “The visitor called the police almost at night – they came, tied everything up and started working. And yesterday they were also – accordingly, the work is going on. We are very much waiting for the results – who, in general, could afford to plan such a “wonderful” action”, – emphasizes Pavlo Gudimov. A sculpture was damaged in Lviv. Restorers eliminate the consequences of damage to the sculpture. Photo: Galina Grigorenko’s Facebook. Restorers are currently trying to wash the sculpture in Stryi Park, but so far they have not been able to restore it to its original appearance. “Yesterday, the restorers worked all day, they washed it off a little, but this oil itself was extremely corroded, because the material is porous and has certain cracks. That is why the damage was visible again in the morning. And there is not much optimism that it will be returned to its original state, so far – no with the author, not with the restorers, but we will try. Although the most important thing is that the shape of the sculpture itself is not damaged, but the texture is no longer the same,” says the curator. What preceded the “Confident” sculpture, which was installed on a temporary pedestal in Stryi Park about a week ago, became the subject of controversy on the Internet. In particular, “different beauty” and permits for installing modern art in public space were discussed in Lviv. Later, the photo with “Confident” was exhibited by Lviv’s mayor Andriy Sadovyi. It became known about the damage to the sculpture on the morning of August 23 from a post by Pavel Gudimov. Posts condemning the act of vandalism in Stryi Park are circulating on social networks. Some of the contributors noted that all attempts to spoil the sculpture did not work – it is now more “Confident”. Former Deputy Minister of Culture Halyna Grigorenko wrote that the damage to the sculpture should receive even more publicity, tagging ex-deputy, former Deputy Minister, public activist Iryna Podolyak, who lives in Lviv. “I am sure that there is nothing to add to the heated discussion. Vandalism is vandalism, a wild and vile manifestation of powerlessness, regardless of place and time. I absolutely agree with Iryna Podolyak that this is a case for speaking out in different communities,” wrote Galina Grigorenko. When to visit the Sculpture Week The main program of the Sculpture Week, which will be held in Lviv, will begin on September 20 and last until October 11. But long-term projects that will be in public space are designed for a year. This is, for example, the “Shevchenko Street Gallery”, on Shevchenko Street, where modern art and sculptures will be presented, as well as the “sculpture route” in Stryi Park, of which Vasyl Korchovy’s “Confident” became a part. In total, the route includes 8 sculptures created in Kanev as part of the International Sculpture Symposium of different years by the Red and Black Art Association.
