American doctors attached a pig’s liver to the body of a brain-dead person. For 72 hours, she successfully filtered the blood.
As The Guardian reports, the experiment was conducted by surgeons from the University of Pennsylvania. They did not transplant the liver, but attached it to the body from the outside. This made it possible to create a kind of “bridge” for blood purification, similar to dialysis in case of kidney failure.
The deceased’s organs were not suitable for donation, so his family allowed his body to be used for research.
In the course of the experiment, doctors used a genetically modified pig liver. She was connected to a device that normally helps support a donor’s human liver before transplantation. Blood circulation was maintained by special devices.

The result of the study was the filtering of human blood with the help of pig liver and special devices for 72 hours. According to the surgeons, the donor’s body remained stable all the time. There was also no damage to the liver.
Doctors have been working on the development of devices for “liver dialysis” for a long time. The new experiment is a step toward future trials of this technique in patients with liver failure.
It will be recalled that a man died in the USA who was transplanted with a pig’s heart for the second time in the history of medicine. This happened almost six weeks after the operation.
