Five films claim the right to represent Ukraine in the “Best International Feature Film” category. This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Film Academy. The Ukrainian Oscar Committee received applications from the authors of the following films: “20 Days in Mariupol”, directed by Mstislav Chernov. This is a documentary-testimony, created on the basis of the footage shot by a war correspondent in Mariupol, besieged by the Russians. “Iron Butterflies”, directed by Roman Lyubiy. Documentary film about the investigation of the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines MH17 by the Russian military at the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war. “Pamfir”, directed by Dmytro Suholytkyi-Sobchuk. A crime drama about a former smuggler, the events of which develop on the eve of the bright celebration of Malanka. Terykony, directed by Taras Tomenko. This is a story about children who do not see war on TV, who have suffered from shelling, who have lost parents and loved ones, and about childhood, which continues despite the war. “SHTTL”, directed by Adrien Walter. Drama about the love of young residents of a shtetl (town in Yiddish) in Lviv Oblast in June 1941, a day before the Nazi offensive. In 2022, two full-length films from Ukraine applied for the American Film Academy Award – the film “Klondike” directed by Maryna Er Horbach and “Sniper. White Raven” directed by Maryan Bushan. In the end, the committee chose the film “Klondike”. This drama tells the story of a family that found itself at the epicenter of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash, which was shot down by pro-Russian separatists from a Russian Buk installation on July 17, 2014, near the village of Hrabovo in the Donetsk region.
