For the first time in 20 years. A new nomination will appear at the Oscars

For the first time in 20 years, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced a new nomination for the “Oscar” award – for casting directors. However, the winners in this category can only be announced in two years.

This is reported by The New York Times.

The board of directors of the academy voted to create this category on February 7.

Casting directors have pushed for the nomination for decades. They argued that their work was critical to the success of any film, but the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rejected this idea.

A common argument against the casting award was the length of the ceremony, which lasted three and a half hours in 2023 and four hours and 23 minutes in 2002.

The new category will be introduced for films released in 2025, meaning that the first winners in this category will be announced in 2026.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tends to be conservative when it comes to introducing new awards: The last category created was the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film, which was established in 2001. (It was given to Shrek.)

In 2018, there were attempts to introduce a new nomination – “best popular film”, but the Academy abandoned the idea after a negative reaction from the public and some of its members. With this in mind, the category for casting directors will be the first new Oscar nomination in 20 years.
