For the first time in Ukraine: “Okhmatdyt” surgeons performed an operation to increase the volume of the chest

Surgeons of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdit” performed an operation on the chest of a child with asphyxial thoracic dystrophy. Such an intervention was carried out for the first time in Ukraine.
As the medical institution said, the boy with a rare syndrome that occurs in one of 130 thousand newborns, came to “Okhmatdyt” at the age of 1 month.
Children with this disease have a small bell-shaped chest, which limits the work of the lungs and interferes with normal breathing, Okhmatdyta explains.
The course of the disease is very severe, especially if symptoms develop in children under 1 year of age. Often, such patients die from respiratory failure and recurrent pneumonias or become dependent on ventilators.

Surgical treatment of the syndrome appeared in 1995. This is an ateral thoracic expansion, which allows you to increase the volume of both halves of the chest. These operations are rare and have only been performed in a few clinics in the US, Great Britain and Italy.
It was risky to perform such an intervention on the little patient “Okhmatdyt”, because he is the youngest of those whose cases have been described in the professional literature.
The boy was operated on in two stages: at 1.5 months on the right side, and at 2.5 months on the left.
“The essence of the operation is that six ribs are successively intersected in a checkerboard pattern. And then they are connected by special metal structures in such a way that the long segments of two ribs are made into one rib that is twice as long. As a result, the volume of the chest increases.” – explained surgeon Yevhen Rudenko.
According to the medical examination, it was possible to increase the volume of the boy’s chest. Currently, his postoperative wounds have healed and he is training to breathe on his own.
We will remind, in Kyiv, doctors operated on a child for 23 hours, simultaneously transplanting her liver and correcting a heart defect.
