This winter, the National Natural Park “Tuzlivski Lymani” became a refuge for small cormorants – rare birds listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. There were 22 of them in total.

As reported in the national park, small cormorants have settled in the Maly Sasik and Dzantsheisky estuaries. They used to be here on the fly and sometimes in the summer.

Now these birds feed mainly on small fish from ice-free areas of estuaries.

Small cormorants are the smallest among the cormorants of Ukraine. Their body length is only 45-55 centimeters.

In Ukraine, these birds nest on the Azov-Black Sea coast, mainly in the deltas of the Danube, Dniester, Dnieper and Eastern Sivash. Small settlements are also being formed in other parts of southern Ukraine.

Since 2021, small cormorants have been included in the Red Book of Ukraine. The reasons for the decrease in their number have not been precisely established. However, the most likely are wetland development and drainage, fishing gear deaths, hunting shootings, increased anxiety and abnormally harsh winters.

We will remind, in the national park “Tuzlivski Lymani” scientists recorded two dozen white-winged terns, which could not fly to Africa due to a storm.
