France announced the introduction of a fine for missing doctor’s appointments

The French government plans to fine patients who do not show up for scheduled appointments with doctors. They want to charge 5 euros each.
The initiative was announced by the Prime Minister of France, Gabriel Attal, informs Medical Xpress.
An aging population forces more and more French people to seek health care services. However, currently, every year about 27 million appointments with doctors do not take place due to the fact that people do not show up to medical institutions.
It is assumed that the introduction of fines for non-appearance will force French citizens to plan visits to doctors more responsibly and will reduce the burden on the health care system.
The new rules are expected to come into force from the beginning of 2025.
A fine will be imposed on those who do not show up for the appointment or cancel less than 24 hours before the consultation. Also, doctors will assess whether the reason for non-appearance was serious enough to avoid paying a fine.
The draft law, which provides for such innovations, the government will submit it to the parliament. The new rules are expected to come into force from the beginning of 2025.
