Three construction workers of one brigade from the Rivne region fell ill with botulism during their stay in Kyiv. The patients are currently receiving medical assistance.
This is the second case of a mass disease due to this infection in the last 10 years, said the general director of the regional center for disease control and prevention, Roman Safonov, during an online briefing at the Regional State Administration.
“A construction crew of six people from Rokytny, while on construction work in Kyiv, had a good dinner of boiled (semi-raw) salted pork with layers of home-made lard and without heat treatment. Out of six, three fell ill with botulism“, Safonov said.
Despite the active clinical manifestations of the disease, the men did not immediately turn to doctors. Due to the deterioration of their condition, they returned to the Rivne region.

The first patient turned to doctors on the seventh day of the disease, and the other two men – on the 11th day. All of them had characteristic symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, double vision, difficulty swallowing.
“All three cases were laboratory-confirmed, the patient was administered botulinum toxoid and currently all are alive, continue to be treated with a good prognosis in the hospital“, concluded Roman Safonov.
