At Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, rector Borys Zimenkovsky was fired, who made sexist jokes and made fun of students’ surnames during the assignment of graduates to internships. The position of acting rector was taken by Orest Chemeris, associate professor, doctor of medical sciences, specialty “Surgery”, vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work, the Ministry of Health reports. “In the near future, the new acting rector is tasked with preparing and conducting a competition to fill the vacant position of the rector of LNMU. Also, among the top-priority tasks in the position is the development of the concept of the development of the university hospital as part of LNMU and the preparation of the medical institution for the conclusion of contracts for medical services for the population under the Medical Program guarantees,” said the Ministry of Health. On July 4, the LNMU website noted that Vice-Chancellor Orest Chemerys will work under the terms of a 5-year contract. Since 2013, Orest Chemerys has worked at LNMU named after Danyla Halytskyi at the Department of Surgery No. 1, first as an assistant, and later as an associate professor. He was also the deputy dean for work with foreign students. In April 2020, Chemerys became the director of the health care department of the Lviv regional state administration, where he worked until July 3, 2023. Earlier, university students talked about the sexist jokes of Borys Zimenkovsky, and doctor Roman Shtibel published fragments of a video from the distribution of students, where the university rector makes fun of the surname of a student who wants to become a surgeon. “A woman wants to kill! It’s sad. I wouldn’t want to know that,” says Rector Zimenkovskyi. “And if the fish were stuffed?” – answers someone from the board. “What if I get stabbed at night?” – then the rector continued. After that, the Ministry of Health reacted and noted that there will be “personnel decisions”. Borys Zimenkovskii held the position of rector of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University since 1998.
