How can Ukrainians abroad acquire inheritance? The Office of the Ombudsman explains
[ad_1]
Ukrainians who have found temporary protection from the war abroad may have difficulties with issuing, replacing or restoring documents.
The Office of the Ombudsman explained how our citizens abroad can obtain the right to an inheritance that remained in Ukraine.
According to the Civil Code of Ukraine, the heir who wishes to accept the inheritance must personally submit a corresponding application.
This document must be notarized with the signature of the notary of the host country.
Depending on the availability of international agreements between the host country and Ukraine, you may need an apostille.
It is also necessary to make a notarized translation of the application into Ukrainian.

Heirs outside of Ukraine may submit such an application by mail to the address of a notary located in the territory of Ukraine.
The application should be sent by mail before the end of the 6-month period after the death of the testator.
The specified term for registration of inheritance can be extended by another 4 months during martial law.
If it is not possible to send a letter to Ukraine, it is necessary to contact the consular institutions or diplomatic missions of Ukraine in the host country.
“The heir submits an application for acceptance of inheritance to the consular office – in person or by letter.
In the first case, it is not necessary to notarize the signature of the heir – the consulate will establish the identity of the heir and verify his signature on the basis of documents confirming the identity”– say the Office of the Ombudsman.
Employees of diplomatic/consular institutions can issue certificates of the right to inheritance, certify the correctness of copies of documents and extracts from them, authenticity of signatures, translation of documents from one language to another, etc.
We will remind you that earlier we explained how to issue a foreign passport for a child in another country.
The Ministry of Health also told how to issue a maternity leave for Ukrainian women abroad.
