How, despite the war, sports stars of the European level are being trained in Ukraine

40 talented young men from all over the country study at the unique volleyball academy in the Frankiv region. The Epicenter-Podolyan Academy is the only institution in Ukraine that trains athletes according to the latest European standards and grows players for the national team.

Selection of the most talented

Maksym Kozniuk, a pupil of the academy, has been playing volleyball since the third grade of school. His father – a professional volleyball player – took his son to all important matches since childhood. At one of the games of the Ukrainian national team, Maksym managed to take a photo with his idol, Vlad Didenko, the winner of the Cup and Super Cup of Ukraine.

Then he promised himself to become a professional volleyball player, and now he plays as a passer in the Epicenter-Podolyan volleyball academy, just like his idol. In the future, Maksym has every chance to become a worthy replacement for Vlad Didenko.

All children in the academy study for free, thanks to the help of a sponsor – the company “Epicentr”. However, selection and discipline at the institution are strict – only recently four boys were expelled.

“They thought they had come to a resort,” says the head coach.

In order to get into the academy, all applicants filled out a questionnaire, after which the coaches selected applicants for review. From among 200 candidates from all over the country, only 40 students aged 12 to 17 were able to become part of the “Epicenter-Podolyan” volleyball academy.

A significant part of the pupils played volleyball since elementary school, although there are talented children who were able to show a decent level, having previously played volleyball only as part of amateur teams.

For example, Renat Rudnytsky from the small town of Horodok in the Khmelnytskyi region, has been playing volleyball for two years and dreams of a professional career.

During the selection for the academy, he did not pass the medical board, but within a few weeks the boy returned again. During this time, he was examined in the best clinics in Kyiv to prove that there are no contraindications to sports activities.

In the academy, they say that usually the best players come out of such stubborn and stubborn ones.

Training according to European standards

The well-known coach Nataliya Bratchyk is responsible for the education of the younger group of the “Epicenter-Podolany” volleyball academy. Over 30 years of work, she has trained more than one generation of professional volleyball players. In particular, she was the coach of the player “Epicenter-Podolany” and the national team of Ukraine Maksym Drozd.

Well-known specialists also train the middle (Vitaly Bondar) and senior groups (Olexandr Prokopets). Both are volleyball masters and titled athletes who were players of the Ukrainian Super League last year.

At the same time, the academy team trains students according to the latest methods, has created an effective training schedule and is able to improve their qualifications in Poland, where the volleyball school is one of the strongest in the world.

The Volleyball Federation of Ukraine and the National Olympic Committee, which have put a lot of effort into creating and forming the academy, also play a major role in the training of high-level professional players.

Forge of champions

Thanks to the professional management, the help of the sponsor and the support of the officials, today five pupils of the Academy “Epicenter-Podolany” are part of the Youth National Team of Ukraine U-18 – Maksym Koznyuk, Oleksandr Tymkiv, Vitaly Pidlubny, as well as Artem Yatsenko and Ilya Tkachenko.

The last two this year also became silver medalists of the championship of the Eastern European Volleyball Zonal Association as part of the youth national team of Ukraine.

“Epicenter-Podolanyi Volleyball Academy is a successful symbiosis of public-private partnership that creates prospects for future champions,” commented the director of the academy Kostyantyn Lyseiko.

— Every day, students of the academy have two training sessions – more physical training in the morning and technical training with balls in the evening. In the lunch between training sessions, training takes place.

We chose the best young men of the country and set ambitious goals for our students to represent Ukraine on the international stage and show that our state is strong and invincible.”

According to him, the academy has created all the conditions for the comprehensive development of athletes. It is a logically built sports and educational space, where a dormitory, an educational building, a sports hall, a canteen and a shelter are located in one place.

At the same time, the company “Epicentr” reconstructed the locker rooms, exercise room and sports hall, and also fully provides students with equipment and sports equipment. Thanks to this, Maksym Kozniuk, Renat Rudnytskyi, and other talented young men from all over the country have a chance to realize their dreams, becoming truly outstanding volleyball players.
