How to make a snack at school useful for a child – advice from the Ministry of Health

This year, many Ukrainian schoolchildren returned to their desks despite the war. And although children take most of their meals at home, they often take lunch boxes with them. How exactly to make them useful for the child, the Ministry of Health told. President of the Association of Dietitians of Ukraine, public health consultant of the Ministry of Health Oleg Shvets recommends involving the children themselves in the preparation and selection of the future contents of the box. “They are more likely to eat meals that they helped prepare. Be creative and make lunch boxes bright, add different products,” says the expert. These are products with a high protein content: bread; cereal bars; nuts; cheese; eggs In addition, you should prepare canapés and sandwiches from whole grain bread. The child should be gradually accustomed to it. First, you can try to make a sandwich from one slice of white or black bread, and one slice of whole grain. The Ministry of Health says that mayonnaise and cream cheese should not be used with other spreads. Instead, you can take a filling with a moderate fat content: chicken or turkey, tuna or salmon, hard cheese with a low fat content. Green salad and vegetables should always be added to sandwiches. The choice can be between cherry tomatoes or carrot, cucumber, pepper or celery sticks. And in a separate compartment, you can add hummus or another sauce to make eating vegetables tastier. In addition, you should always put pieces of fruit and berries in the lunch box that the child can eat at once: banana, apple, pear, pieces of mandarin or orange, etc. So that they do not turn brown, they are poured with lemon juice. Instead of fruit or chocolate bars, you should use dried fruits such as raisins and dried apricots. And instead of cakes, you can take chocolate, whole grain bars and cookies. Finally, nutritionists recommend yogurts for children with a low fat and sugar content, and if the cheese has a lot of salt and fat, you should put a smaller slice of it.
