Psychosis is one of the mental disorders that can be treated by a family doctor. Disturbances in thinking, perception, emotions and behavior are characteristic of this condition, the National Health Service of Ukraine says. In particular, the following signs of mental disorder are distinguished: neglect of usual duties related to work, study, household or social affairs; excited aggressive behavior; persistent false beliefs; chaotic, agitated, passive or hyperactive; marked apathy or lack of connection between the emotion the person is talking about and the emotional response. “Symptoms associated with this disorder are treatable and a person can fully recover. One of the common misconceptions about psychosis is that the person or their family is to blame for the illness,” the service says. To begin treatment, the patient must see a family doctor who will examine and determine the presence of a mental disorder. The patient may also be prescribed special drugs. It is important to take them as prescribed and regularly come for repeated consultations. It is also important to support a person in everyday activities, regular support and rehabilitation in the community. “Recurrences or worsening of symptoms happen often, and therefore it is important to recognize them in the early stages and see a doctor as soon as possible,” says the National Health Service. Stress, insufficient sleep, alcohol and psychoactive substances can increase the symptoms of the disease. With psychosis, doctors advise to follow a healthy lifestyle. The patient needs: a balanced diet; physical activity; regular sleep; proper personal hygiene; resumption of social activities, which she was previously engaged in. “This will provide psychological and social support. These include meetings with family members, walks with friends, visits to neighbors, social events at work, sports, and community events,” the department says. If your loved ones have been diagnosed with psychosis, you should avoid constant criticism of the person and do not try to convince them that their experiences are false or unreal. Even if a person behaves unusually, the tone of the conversation should be neutral, with an emphasis on support. “If there is a clinical need for this, the family doctor will refer a person with psychosis to a psychiatrist. After the patient’s condition stabilizes, he can continue to be seen by a primary care physician,” the National Health Service says. To find a primary care facility where you can get psychological help, call the contact center of the National Health Service at number 16-77. You can also use the dashboard with signed contracts on the NSZU website. In the service group field, select the package “Support and treatment of adults and children with mental disorders at the primary level of medical care.
