In eight months of 2023, 57 cases of botulism were recorded in Ukraine, four of which were among children. For the most part, they were connected with the consumption of fish and its products, said the chief state sanitary doctor Ihor Kuzin, the Public Health Center reports. According to him, two patients from Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia region died as a result of botulism. Zhytomyr and Chernihiv regions are the “leaders” in terms of botulism, where the highest risks of the spread of this infectious disease are recorded, the health doctor added. According to the results of rapid tests, there were positive results, but during the epidemic investigation, this diagnosis was removed,” said Ihor Kuzin. Botulism is food poisoning that can lead to serious consequences. Botulism toxin is one of the most powerful of all known biological poisons. At the same time, botulism can be avoided in most cases if you follow food rules. Avoid consumption of: dried, smoked, salted and canned fish; canned meat and mushrooms; home-made canned goods; if you are not sure that the products were stored and/or transported properly; if you doubt the quality of the products.
