In 2024, humanity experienced the warmest March on record. The average air temperature this month was +14.4°C. Such an increase in temperature has been happening for the tenth month in a row.

As reported the EU climate change monitoring service, this year in March the air temperature was 0.1°C higher than the previous record – in March 2016.

At the same time, the average global temperature over the past twelve months has increased by 0.7°C, compared to the average for 1991-2020, and by 1.58°C – with the pre-industrial period (1850-1900).

In March 2024, temperatures across Europe were at or above the 30-year average. The largest anomalies were observed in the central and eastern regions of the continent. In particular, in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Croatia, Latvia and Molodov.

The heat wave also covered other continents – the east of North America, Greenland, the central part of America, part of South America and Africa, the south of Australia and Antarctica.

“Central European temperature anomalies tend to be more variable than global ones. The European average temperature in March 2024 was higher than 1991-2020, making the month the second warmest March on record in Europe and only 0.02°C cooler than March 2014”, – added in the Service.

According to scientists, global climate changes are caused by human activity, as well as El Niño, a natural phenomenon that causes the planet to heat up. It weakens in the eastern equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean, but the sea air temperature remains at a high level.

We will remind that February 2024 has already broken an unprecedented number of heat records.
