In a shopping center in Sydney, a man attacked 25 people with a knife, six of them died. Among the victims was Ashley Hood, who was holding her 9-month-old daughter.

The woman gave the child to strangers who happened to be nearby to save the baby, writes BBC.

The incident happened on April 13 at around 3pm at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre.

40-year-old attacker Joel Kochi had mental problems and “hunted” specifically for women in the shopping center, notes CNN. He was shot on the spot by a police officer. However, five women and a guard received non-life-threatening injuries.

Ashley Hood was one of them. When Joel Kochi injured a woman, she gave her baby to two strangers to save the child.

The mother, who was holding the baby in her arms, was wounded with a knife. The woman simply threw the child to me – that’s how I ended up with the child in my arms“, the witness said.

One of the men told 9News Sydney that the baby was bleeding from the mouth, informs SkyNews.

The two of them tried to save the child and the mother, applying pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding.

“We were just screaming: give us some shirt or t-shirt to stop the baby’s bleeding”said the eyewitness.

The men said that they had come to the shopping mall that day for shopping. Suddenly they saw an unknown person running up to a woman with a child. They understood that she would need help and ordered the employees of one of the stores to close the door to protect the injured woman.

Nevertheless, she died in the hospital on the evening of April 13, writes The telegraph. However, her 9-month-old daughter Harriet survived the operation.

Words cannot express our gratitude to the two men who held and cared for our baby when Ashley could not.”– said the relatives of the deceased.
