In the north of England, the Sycamore Gap tree or “Robin Hood’s tree”, which was the most famous in Britain and grew for about 300 years, was cut down.

Police called it a “deliberate act of vandalism” and have already detained a 16-year-old suspect, according to Reuters and the BBC.

The great plane tree grew for hundreds of years in a gorge between two hills along the Roman Hadrian’s Wall, was a favorite tourist attraction and one of the most photographed trees in the country.

The tree gained world fame after appearing in the 1991 Hollywood film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” However, on the night of September 28, it was deliberately cut down.

“This is a world-renowned landmark and today’s events have caused considerable shock, sadness and anger in the local community and beyond.

An investigation was immediately launched following this act of vandalism and we have arrested one suspect this afternoon.” Northumbria Police Superintendent Kevin Waring said.

The plane tree was a real “star” of the Northumberland National Park, in 2016 it was recognized as the “tree of the year in England”.

In the National Trust of Britain declared, who are shocked and saddened by the incident. Britons are also expressing outrage on social media.

In particular, local deputy Guy Opperman called the act of vandalism “an attack on one of the most famous trees in the country.”

Residents of England loved the “Robin Hood tree” – near it they declared their love, took wedding photo sessions, and scattered the ashes of deceased relatives.
