In Iran, the “morality police” beat a 16-year-old girl in the Tehran subway. After the attack, Armita Garavand is in a coma.

Human rights activists believe the teenage girl was beaten because of the country’s strict hijab laws, according to Kurdish rights group Hengaw.

Armita was seriously injured on October 1, 2023, when she was riding the subway with her friends. The girl was taken to Fajr Hospital in serious condition.

In the video, which spread on the network, it is not visible what was happening inside the car, but the cameras recorded how her friends tried to hold the unconscious girl.

On the recording, it is impossible to see what type of headdress Armita was wearing, writes The Guardian.

At the same time, state media and the management of the Tehran Metro state that Armita Garavand fainted due to low blood pressure and hit a train car.

After the incident with Armita became widely publicized, state media began to deny the physical attack on the girl.

Officials say there was no physical altercation and refer to a cropped version of the video.

Iranian government-affiliated media also published an interview with Armita’s parents, in which they deny the possibility of an attack.

“We have reviewed all the video footage and are convinced that this incident was an accident. We are asking people to pray for the recovery of our child.”said Armita’s father.

However, Hengaw claims that this interview was recorded under duress and in the presence of “security forces”.

Now the girl and all premises of the Fajr hospital are guarded by security forces, so it is almost impossible to visit the victim.

The journalist, who went to the medical center, was detained, but was released after a few hours.

Human rights defenders are sure that the security authorities have established strict control over the victim’s family in order to hide the truth.

“According to reliable information from Hengaw, state security agents seized the mobile phones of all Armita’s family members on suspicion of sending any recorded images after the publication of photos of Armita in the special ward of Tehran’s Fajr Hospital. – says the report of the organization.

A Hengaw source said that Armita’s health has not improved and she is still in a coma.

Human rights activists fear a repeat of the tragedy of Mahsa Amini, who died in hospital after being brutally beaten by security forces because of her “improperly tied hijab”.

Hengaw requests an examination of 16-year-old Armita by an independent medical team consisting of representatives of Doctors Without Borders and the office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Tehran, in the presence of a representative of the UN Committee.

It will be recalled that last year the “morality police” detained 22-year-old Mahsa Amini because of an untied hijab, and then the beaten girl was hospitalized with multiple head injuries.

The security forces denied the allegations of violence, saying that the girl had a heart attack. After the tragedy, the country was shaken by protests against the dictatorship, in which even schoolgirls took part.

Iranians demanded the abolition of brutal laws and a radical dress code against women. Many participants of the protests were sentenced to death.
