In January, Ukraine opened a record number of criminal proceedings due to domestic violence

In January 2024, 55% more criminal proceedings on domestic violence were registered in Ukraine than in the same period last year.

By data platform “Opendatabot”, in January there were 435 such procedures, while in January 2023 – 280.

For the entire year 2023, law enforcement officers opened more than 2,700 cases on allegations of domestic violence – an average of 225 criminal proceedings per month.

For comparison, in 2022, almost 1,500 criminal proceedings on domestic violence were opened in Ukraine, and in 2021 there were more than 2,400 of them.

In total, 10,351 domestic violence cases were opened in Ukraine over the past 5 years. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, 80% of initiated cases reach the court.

As you know, Article 126-1 on domestic violence was first introduced into the Criminal Code of Ukraine in December 2017, and it entered into force in January 2019.
