The initiative is also intended to honor the memory of three children who died at the hands of a drunk driver 17 years ago. One of them drank and sat behind the wheel, while the other watched her colleague. Reporter Hyelim Ha drank a 350-milliliter can of beer, as well as a cup each of umeshu plum wine and shochu liquor within an hour. Despite her cold hands, racing heart, and flushed face, Ha felt she could drive. The driver who hit three children in 2006 said the same during interrogation. The Japanese police say that many drivers who get behind the wheel in a drunken state and do not get into an accident feel invincible and want to repeat their “feats”. However, the probability of death from a traffic accident is 7 times higher when the driver has consumed alcohol, compared to accidents involving sober drivers. “We urge people to properly manage the risks before drinking alcohol, such as not driving to a pub.
