Activists of the charity foundation “Solomyanski Kotyky” covered the monument to Pushkin in Kyiv’s Ivan Bagryany Park (former Pushkin Park) with an “unmasking” net.

On Tuesday, October 24, “Solomyanski kotiki” announced this on social networks.

Not far from our hub, in the park named after Bagryany, there is still a monument to Pushkin – a stigma of the occupation Russian culture. We hung a demasking net on the Pushkin monument in order to remind the society and the authorities that the symbols of Russian imperialism still stand quietly in our cities and the process of de-Russification should take place more actively“, the activists explained their action.

In order to draw attention to the monument to the Russian poet, which still stands in the center of Kyiv, they used a bright version of the camouflage net used by Ukrainian defenders. A net for Pushkin was made from scraps of bright colors to attract attention.

Deputy of the Kyiv City Council Ksenia Semenova said that the monument should be closed with a net, “to remind the society and the authorities that the symbols of Russian imperialism still stand quietly in our cities and the process of de-Russification should take place more actively“.

The “Solomyan Cats” also called on the Cabinet of Ministers to adopt a decision that would allow the dismantling of monuments to Pushkin and other Russian figures. And all those who want to join the de-Russification were invited to join the flash mob: take a photo of the object that should be dismantled and post it on social networks with a hashtag #unmask.

The park in the Shevchenko district of Kyiv, next to the Kyiv Polytechnic, which was named after Pushkin since 1899, was renamed in July this year. Since then, it bears the name of Ukrainian poet, playwright and politician Ivan Bagryany.

Kyiv residents voted for the name change in the “Kyiv Digital” application. At that time, almost 14,000 citizens voted for it.

Since then, the park has changed its name, but the monument to Pushkin has remained in it.

Also, in March of this year, Kyiv was renamed the “Kyiv Pushkin Museum”. Its new name is “Manor on Kudryavka”. The museum was created in 1990, the basis of its collection are materials related to the life of the Russian poet, collected by Kyivan Yakov Berdychevsky. In 1987, he left for Germany and left his entire collection to the city. There is no information that Pushkin stayed at the estate on Kudryavska Street, where the museum was located.

Last December, the plaster bust of Pushkin was removed from the facade of the Olga Kobylyanska Music and Drama Theater in Chernivtsi.

Kharkiv writer Serhiy Zhadan became the real agent of “depushkinization”. He took selfies with monuments to the poet in various Ukrainian cities, and then they were dismantled.
