In Lviv, a competition was announced for the best proposal for the Memorial Complex of Military Burials. It will be arranged in the Lychakiv district of the city.
Applications for participation in the All-Ukrainian architectural competition started on January 5, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy announced.
“We must preserve this memory for future generations. Everyone who lives in Ukraine, in Lviv, should know at what cost modern Heroes protect their land today“, he noted.
The complex will be located on Mechnikov Street.

Registration of participants will last until January 21, 2024, and acceptance of their proposals – until March 18. The results of the architectural competition will be known in early April.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners: 500,000 hryvnias for 1st place, 300,000 hryvnias for 2nd place, and 200,000 hryvnias for 3rd place. The competition will be financed by the funds of benefactors.
“The architectural complex should become an architectural monument of the 21st century, but also a place of strength for every Ukrainian”– added Andriy Sadovy.
The organizers of the competition expect a large number of projects in order to choose the best among them.
“This is our history, the great pain and suffering of people. For us, this memory is important. Our children and grandchildren should remember and know this history. Memorial complexes provide such an opportunity.” – said the mayor of Lviv.
Details of the terms of reference for the architectural competition were discussed by the working group on December 13, 2023. It consisted of historians, representatives of artistic circles, cultural figures of Lviv.
They agreed that the appearance of gravestones for fallen defenders may differ depending on their religious or denominational affiliation.
An interfaith prayer hall – a chapel, a columbarium and an information center for visitors are also planned to be built within the complex.
“We want to see an inclusive space, because many brothers will visit the complex in wheelchairs. Also, a zone for days of remembrance, because closer to Mechnikova Street there can be quite large gatherings.
On the one hand, it should be a comfortable space in terms of accessibility and stay, and on the other hand, it should carry a memorial function and be significant.”– emphasized urban planning specialist Anton Kolomeytsev.
We will remind you that in Kyiv for a long time they cannot agree on the location of the future memorial cemetery. At the beginning of December 2023, the Council again supported the transfer of the National Military Memorial Cemetery from Bykivna (this place was supported by the families of fallen heroes) to Gatny.
The head of the Institute of National Remembrance, Anton Drobovych, believes that minimalist gravestones in the shape of Cossack crosses or rectangles should be made at the cemetery.
