In Lviv, a 10-month-old baby with a liver tumor that was larger than the organ itself was saved.

As reported at the St. Nicholas Hospital, the parents found out about the birth defect in their son by accident as early as the eighth month of his life.

Maksymko is from Lviv Oblast. The boy fell ill with SARS and when the family doctor examined him, she noticed a suspiciously enlarged tummy. The child was sent for ultrasound. During the examination, a giant tumor was found in the baby’s abdominal cavity.

Specialists of the hospital performed CT diagnostics on the boy and saw that there is a benign tumor in the center of the liver – a mesenchyma.

This is a rather rare formation. It occurs in only two out of 100,000 children, say doctors.

According to the hospital, Maksymko was born with this tumor. It grew rapidly and damaged healthy tissues. The size of the neoplasm at the time of the last examination had already reached 15 cm, while the liver itself in a child of this age has a size of 9 by 7 cm.

It was necessary to remove the tumor urgently! Without surgery, the boy would quickly develop liver failure. He could die or need an urgent transplant“, the doctors emphasize.

The operation lasted 8 hours and was successful

The hospital adds: before operating, the doctors had to make sure whether the organ would be able to function after surgery.

Specialists found out that Maksymko has only 30% of a healthy liver, and this is not enough. Therefore, doctors first removed the cyst inside the tumor. In this way, they managed to increase the volume of a healthy liver to 60%.

Since the giant tumor was located in the center of the liver, it was necessary not only to remove the tumor, but also to sew two pieces of the organ into one.

Despite the threat of blood loss, the operation, which lasted 8 hours, was successful.
