1.5-year-old Luka from Zhytomyr Oblast, who underwent a split liver transplant from a posthumous donor for the first time in Ukraine, was discharged from the hospital. Doctors say that the child is healthy.
This is reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv.
Luka was born with a fatal disease – biliary atresia. This disease destroys the liver.
As doctors say, children with this defect often die young.

“Such patients without transplantation have only a few months to years to live. And, unfortunately, there is no perspective. The only way out is a liver transplant“, says Andrii Dvorakevich, deputy medical director for surgical work at St. Nicholas Hospital.
In the medical facility, it is noted that “Luka’s life count was already counting down to months.” Medicines no longer helped.

A chance for salvation appeared thanks to the family of a 15-year-old boy whose life ended suddenly due to brain damage. His parents agreed to the donation.
Their decision saved the lives of Luka, two more children and two adults.
