For the first time in Ukraine, a patient underwent osseointegration prosthetics – during the operation, the prosthesis was implanted into the bone. The first patient was Igor Krupnov, a 56-year-old veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war and captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to the First Medical Association of Lviv. The military man lost both legs in the fall when he and his comrades hit a mine in a car. “When Ihor learned about the new technology of prosthetics, he wanted to be the first patient in Ukraine,” writes the PMO of Lviv. The war adjusted these plans. Now Ihor aims to overcome a distance of 10 km with prostheses,” the hospital added. According to doctors, osseointegration prosthetics has two advantages: sensitivity and functionality. Australian orthopedic traumatologist Munyed Al Muderis, who is considered one of the leading specialists in the world, helps Ukrainian doctors master this field of prosthetics. “The advantage of osseointegration is that the patient has sensitivity. For example, if they walk on grass, they feel its softness, or if they step on a cable or their wife’s finger, they feel it,” said Al Muderis. The first steps on implanted prostheses can be taken already on the second day after the operation, and in six weeks – fully walk.
