The face of a 59-year-old teacher from Lysychansk, who was hit in the eye by a Russian projectile, was restored in the Lviv center “Nezlamni”. This was reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv. Olena Svetlova taught chemistry, biology and the basics of health at the Lysichan school. On June 20, 2022, Olena went to the park to pick linden trees and came under fire. A fragment of a Russian projectile hit the woman in the eye. Then she was sent to Dnipro, where the woman spent three weeks in a coma. Later, Elena was sent to Lviv – to the Nezlamni Center. “When Olena found out how badly the Russian projectile disfigured her face, at first she didn’t even want to live. She couldn’t see herself like that – with a hole in the middle of her face. The eye and the upper part of the nose were no longer there,” doctors say. Doctors of the department of maxillofacial surgery performed a complex reconstructive operation on Elena. In place of the hole, surgeons transplanted a flap from the woman’s forehead. Only after the operation, Olena dared to look at herself in the mirror for the first time since the injury. At the “Nezlamnykh” Mental Health Center, Olena also underwent a course of body-oriented psychotherapy. “Previously, the patient could not feel the right half of her face, and her head was squeezed, as if she was wearing a tight helmet. With each class, says Olena, physical sensations return, and her soul becomes calmer. Now she feels her face better and accepts her new self.” they say in the hospital. Elena even took part in a photo project of a glossy magazine about women whose faces and bodies were disfigured by the war. She continues to teach remotely to her Lysichan students who are in different parts of the world. However, during the video lesson, Elena does not turn on the camera, she does not want the children to see her face yet. However, the woman hopes that the next reconstructive operation will help her. During the intervention, surgeons have to restore the bone defect of the back of the nose and the undereye area. For this, doctors will use either an artificial prosthesis or cartilage from Elena’s rib. “We will think about how to restore aesthetics. Because we closed the defect – the hole – and now we will restore beauty. After Ms. Elena, we have already received more difficult patients with larger defects. Because of the war, we are forced to develop rapidly in terms of reconstructive surgery.”, – says Oleg Kovtunyak, head of the maxillofacial surgery department of the Nezlamni Center. The woman hopes that the next reconstructive facial surgery will help.
