A South Korean pastor has been convicted of sexually abusing minor refugees from North Korea

In South Korea, pastor Chun Ki Won, who helped North Korean refugees, was imprisoned. He was found guilty of sexual violence against minor fugitives.

The man was sentenced to five years in prison, CNN reports.

Chun Ki Won headed the Christian charity Durihana. According to him, since 1999, she has helped more than a thousand refugees reach Seoul.

In addition, the organization runs a boarding school for North Korean children, where they are “taught about the Christian faith.”

Refugees from North Korea often flee the country through China. However, there they are considered illegal migrants and may be forcibly deported. At home, refugees may face torture, sexual violence, camps, or even execution.

In addition, thousands of North Korean refugees are kidnapped or sold to work in the Chinese sex industry.

To avoid this, many of the fugitives rely on a network of secret routes and conspiratorial apartments created by Korean pastors. The Chun-led Durihana was part of it.

The Seoul Central District Court found Chung Ki Won guilty of sexually abusing six minors between 2016 and 2023.

All victims were either North Korean refugees or children of refugees.

According to the judge, Chun molested the teenagers “while in his position as a school principal, where he had absolute influence over the victims.”

In addition to the five-year sentence, Chun was sentenced to an 80-hour treatment program designed for sex offenders. He will also be banned for five years from working in organizations related to children and young people with disabilities.

It will be recalled that South Korea obliged Japan to pay compensation to women who were forced to work in brothels during the Second World War.
