The Kharkiv police saved a treasure dating back to the 2nd century BC – a bronze foundry set – from illegal resale. A local man planned to sell it through an online ad.

The head of the National History Museum of Ukraine filed a complaint with the police after seeing an announcement on a special website about the sale of artifacts dating back to the 2nd century BC for 300,000 hryvnias, the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Kharkiv region reported.
Law enforcement officers established the identity of the violator – he turned out to be a 47-year-old resident of Kharkiv. During the search of his home, 21 kilograms of items related to cultural values were found. Currently, the police is investigating how the artifacts ended up in the hands of the attacker.

About the value of the find UP. Culture asked an archaeologist, an employee of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, curator of the exhibition “Archaeologist’s Day: Rescued Treasures” Maxim Levadu.
“This is an extremely rare hoard of fragments of sickles and other tools belonging to the Gava-holigrad culture. It is connected with Western Ukraine“, said Levada.
According to the archeologist, the largest object found is a cauldron, however, it is the smaller objects and fragments that are interesting to study. “The wreck treasure itself is extremely interesting. This is the treasure of a craftsman who used a damaged tool as raw material. There are periods in the history of mankind when certain territories experience a hunger for bronze. And then the old objects begin to be remelted, recycled“, he explained.

Levada expressed the hope that the treasure discovered by the Kharkiv police could be studied for its territory of origin: “The treasures of the masters always mark the ancient paths. At that time, people who did not have their own land or did not have the opportunity to cultivate it became craftsmen. So, in order to survive, it was necessary to produce a lot, quickly move along these routes and sell. Therefore, if we can investigate this, we will find out a lot of information that was almost stolen from you and me“.
The archaeologist specified that experts will be able to proceed to the study of the find already after the conclusion of the trial. “An expert institution is now being determined. I think that responsible storage will be in our museum. Then there will be an examination, then a trial. Well, then let’s start exploring everything“, said Levada.

He shared that after the New Year, the National Museum of History will resume the exhibition of salvaged treasures, which was opened in 2023 before the Day of the Archaeologist. “And if they give us permission to display at least part of this treasure, we will also add a showcase of Kharkiv police officers“, the archaeologist added.
Levada expressed his own observation that law enforcement officers understand the importance of immediate investigation of such cases and emphasized that the work to save cultural values is best progressed in the east of the country.
“For this year, according to our statements to the police, all seizures are left-bank Ukraine. These are Poltava, Sumy, and now Kharkiv regions – the most affected, mined, and destroyed regions. The further from the border, the worse things are according to our statements. And the city of Kyiv too“, said Levada.
