A similar case happened with a 50-year-old Italian woman who had a brain tumor. The woman suddenly began to speak with a different rhythm and melody. However, the case of an American prostate cancer patient is a rare example of a patient’s altered speech closely resembling a recognizable accent. “He was obviously not of Irish descent and had never even been to Ireland. However, 20 months after being diagnosed with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, he began to speak with a Southern Irish accent,” the report said. Unlike previous cases, this patient did not initially have brain tumors. At the time of the onset of symptoms, doctors also found no abnormalities in the neurological examination, psychiatric history, or brain MRI. “Despite chemotherapy, the cancer progressed, leading to multifocal brain metastases and a likely paraneoplastic ascending palsy, which caused the patient’s death,” the researchers wrote. Despite chemotherapy, the patient’s cancer continued to progress rapidly and the man did not survive. He spoke with an Irish accent until his death. Doctors suspect that the patient’s FAS was the result of a rare paraneoplastic neurological disorder (PND).
