In the American zoo of Fort Worth (Texas), a pregnant gorilla developed a serious illness, due to which the animal had to undergo an emergency caesarean section. The baby was born five weeks early.

As informs Telegraph, at mother gorilla Sekani developed preeclampsia – a deep disorder of the functions of vital organs and systems, which most often occurs against the background of previously existing diseases: hypertension, diseases of the kidneys, liver and biliary tract, endocrine diseases, etc.

A team of gynecologists who had no previous experience working with primates helped the veterinarians during the delivery.

The zoo said that Sekani, a 33-year-old western lowland gorilla, has fully recovered, and her cub is also doing well.

However, Sekan never developed maternal instincts, so the zookeepers had to take care of Jamila themselves. The staff wore special “gorilla suits” to simulate the sensation of her mother’s body hair.

Jamila is the first gorilla to be born by caesarean section in the zoo’s 115-year history.

The experts suggested that the “rejection of the mother from the child” may be the result of the fact that the adult primate did not experience the “hormonal signals associated with full-term natural childbirth”.

It is reported that zoo workers are currently training 24-year-old gorilla Gracie to be Jamila’s adoptive mother.

We will remind, in the American state of Tennessee at the Brights Zoo a rare giraffe without spots was born.
