In the world, the 6th person was able to be cured of HIV: what is known

The sixth person who was cured of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) appeared in the world. France 24 writes about this. A fifty-year-old man recovered after a bone marrow transplant. He was dubbed the “Geneva patient”. Now he is the sixth person to be cured of HIV. According to scientists, previous patients were also transplanted with already mutated CCCR5 stem cells. This cell blocks the penetration of HIV into body cells. Similarly, in 2018, the same patient from Geneva was transplanted with these stem cells for the treatment of an aggressive form of leukemia, but without the mutation. This meant that the virus was still able to enter the patient’s cells. So far, scientists do not rule out the possibility of the virus returning. But the patient is said to be in a state of long-term remission. The man was diagnosed with HIV back in 1990. Asier Saez-Cirion, a scientist at the Institut Pasteur in France, said that if there were no signs of the virus after 12 months, the probability that it would be undetectable in the future was much higher. He also added several possible explanations for why the Geneva patient recovered. “In this particular case, perhaps the transplant eliminated all the infected cells without the need for the famous mutation,” he says. The scientist also pointed out the important role of immunosuppressive treatment, which was required after transplantation. Before that, people were able to be cured in Berlin, London, Duesseldorf, New York and City of Hope. We will remind you that we spoke in detail about the “Dusseldorf patient”, the third person who was cured of HIV. We also previously wrote about a mother with HIV who was able to give birth to a healthy child. Read also: Scientists have discovered a combination of genes that limits HIV infection
