In Ukraine, a mobile application was developed for recording the number of storks. These data are necessary for scientists to monitor the state of the population and implement new measures for their protection.

“The number of storks will be counted this year not only in Ukraine, but also in the entire nesting range of the species, in particular in the countries of Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. In total – in 54 countries.

Ukraine has one of the largest populations of storks in Europe — approximately 35-45 thousand nesting pairs, so the data from our country are important.” – are reported in the Ukrainian Bird Protection Society.

In general, the following information will be collected for accounting:

• when the birds returned to Ukraine;
• how many pairs occupied the nests;
• how successfully they produced offspring (how many chicks grew up and left the nest in each pair).
  

The Ukrainian Bird Protection Society emphasizes: a nest can be considered occupied if a pair of storks stayed near it for at least a month. The number of chicks is best counted in the second half of June or in the first half of July, when they have already grown up, ornithologists say.

This year credentials can be submitted via smartphone. For this purpose, the company’s specialists developed a special module for the smartphone application based on the SMART international environmental protection program for data collection.

How to use the mobile application?

First, you need to download it to your smartphone – versions for IOS and Android are available.

Next, follow the link to install the necessary configuration for recording storks. With its help, you can add monitoring of the nest and chicks.

“The downloaded information is stored in the application. It is possible to edit it if necessary. You can transfer the accounting data later, if the network does not allow it immediately after the observations are completed.” – noted in the institution.
