In Ukraine, the ban on planting invasive trees can be canceled – environmentalists

[ad_1]

In May 2023, the Ministry of Environment approved a list of 13 alien invasive tree species prohibited for planting in the forests of Ukraine.

However, the State Regulatory Service (SSR) stated that the list was approved in violation of the procedure and is therefore subject to cancellation, reports the Ukrainian environmental group.

The list was supposed to protect the local forest biodiversity from the negative impact of alien species. It included:

  • Ailant is the highest;
  • Aralia Manchurian;
  • The elm is low;
  • Gledichus spiny;
  • Black walnut;
  • Red oak;
  • Western framework;
  • Ash-leaved maple;
  • Narrow-leaved olive;
  • Paulownia (species and hybrids);
  • Robinia ordinary;
  • Cherry trees are late;
  • Pennsylvania ash.

In the message of the DRS, it is said that the inclusion of certain types of trees in the list of invasive does not correspond to European practices and does not take into account scientific data. – say environmentalists.

However, development was carried out by scientists based on European approaches.

When preparing the list, the Ministry of Environment relied on the opinion of a working group formed by scientists and experts in the field of nature protection. The list itself was supported by the environmental community and more than 120 scientists from all over Ukraine. It is also not a regulatory act, because the disembarkation ban was introduced even earlier.” – argues Petro Testov, head of the expert department of the Ukrainian Environmental Protection Group.

If the list is canceled, then the planting of invasive trees in Ukrainian forests may resume already this fall.

It will be recalled that earlier environmentalists explained the danger of invasive trees: they spread independently, without direct human intervention. Therefore, only banning the planting of these trees will not be able to radically change the situation.
