The French artist Emerick Louisset recreated the painting by the Ukrainian artist Ilya Repin “Zaporozhians writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan” in a photo. It depicts soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces instead of Cossacks. The title of the work is “I hear the Cossacks’ answer from afar,” writes the BBC. The artist worked on the project for a year. In his Instagram account, the author of the photo recalled the importance of culture in war. “While the war aimed at conquering Ukrainian territory is obvious to all and its condemnation is relatively consensual in Europe, a much more insidious war that revolves around the control of history and culture remains largely unknown.
