Doctors saved an 8-year-old boy who had a severe post-covid complication. At first, the symptoms were similar to severe poisoning, but the treatment did not improve the condition of the little patient. The child was diagnosed with a severe heart rhythm disorder, reports the Lviv Okhmatdyt Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital. The day before, 8-year-old Nazar contracted COVID-19. Later, his temperature rose to 39°C, he complained of general weakness, abdominal pain and vomiting. The parents turned to the central district hospital at their place of residence. They found fluid accumulation in the pleural cavity,” says the boy’s mother, Maria. The boy was taken to the intensive care unit: his skin turned blue and he had a heart rhythm disorder. Nazar’s condition worsened, so he was transferred to Okhmatdyt. He was diagnosed with myocarditis (inflammation of the myocardium, i.e. the middle layer of the heart muscle) and bilateral pneumonia. The child underwent echocardiography: the heart rate ranged from 19 to 35 per minute. The head of the department of anesthesiology, Vira Pryimakova, said that this is the first case when a child was admitted to the hospital with such serious complications on the cardiovascular system. “Poisoning, as thought at first, turned out to be a severe post-covid complication. It is a combination of both a virus and bacteria. Damage to the conduction system of the heart and polysenteric pneumonia. COVID-19 hits the immune system hard,” added the head of the anesthesiology department. Nazar was transferred to artificial lung ventilation and they decided to install a temporary pacemaker, which is also called an “artificial pacemaker”. The danger for the little patient has passed: his condition is gradually improving, his heart is already working on its own. Doctors plan to take away the temporary pacemaker soon. After that, he will spend some more time under the supervision of doctors before going home. Doctors even warned patients that they would need long rehabilitation. Scientists from the US also investigated Long COVID in children. They found that 4.4% of children had symptoms of COVID-19 lasting four weeks or longer, and 1.8% had symptoms for eight weeks or longer.
