Kyiv Modern Ballet Academic Theater presented a new dance performance – the modern ballet “Tomorrow”. This is the first premiere of the collective in more than a year of full-scale war. Read UP.Kultura in Telegram The premiere of the performance “Tomorrow”, staged to the music of Chopin by the chief choreographer of the theater, honored artist of Ukraine, laureate of the Shevchenko Prize in 2016, Radu Poklitaru, took place on the stage of the October Palace and gathered a full audience. Poklitaru’s new choreographic production was shown as part of an evening of one-act ballets. The evening was opened by the well-known ballet “Up the River” to the music of modern Ukrainian composer Oleksandr Rodin. “Up the River” is a ballet based on Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s story “The Mysterious Story of Benjamin Button” about a man who grew up the other way around. Photo: kyivmodernballet.com Staging the ballet based on Fitzgerald, Poklitaru slightly changed the story known from the story itself and from David Fincher’s adaptation of the same name. Here we also see a completely Faustian character – the Man in Black, who “triggers” the reverse habitation of the main character’s life. And instead of a son, “Benjamin the ballet” has a daughter (Poklitaru previously noted that he deliberately gave more action than in the original work to women: the main character’s wife, lover, daughter and granddaughter). According to its creators, at the heart of the idea is a story about those who live here and now, about the fleetingness of time, about how our actions today shape our future tomorrow. This evening, you could see on stage both new members of the theater and those who left the team long before the start of the full-scale invasion, and now decided to return to the productions of Poklitar. Among them is one of the most famous soloists of Kyiv Modern Ballet, director of choreography for music videos and movies Oleksiy Busko. There are no decorations on the stage, laconic costumes on the artists – nothing distracts from the dance itself. Photo: Oksana Zinchenko Poklitaru says that he didn’t want to show something topical on stage at the height of the war, instead he wanted to create “light” that would add stability and program for a happy tomorrow. “We are currently living in a very difficult time. It is difficult to find a topic that would be in harmony timbranally and emotionally with what the entire Ukrainian people are experiencing. And is it necessary to look for it. That is why the idea of a plot story was rejected immediately. It seems to me that what the brighter and brighter the cultural product created during the war will be, the easier it will be emotionally for everyone to survive this dark time,” explains the choreographer.
