A 16-year-old girl underwent brain surgery at the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt”. During the intervention, she was conscious, informs NDSL “Okhmatdit”. This year, 16-year-old Dasha graduated from school and planned to enter the law faculty. However, an unexpected illness got in the way – a few months ago, Dasha started having headaches, dizziness and speech disorders. Doctors diagnosed a large tumor in the girl’s brain. It was possible to remove it without affecting the centers and pathways, only if Dasha would be conscious during the operation, and even more so – she would talk and involve the speech centers so that the neurosurgeons could preserve the girl’s speech,” the hospital said. According to anesthesiologists, Dasha introduced the so-called “awake anesthesia”, thanks to which the girl was under general anesthesia at the beginning of the operation, and when the neurosurgeons performed the main stage, she was conscious. “Awake anesthesia” includes all possible methods of regional and local anesthesia with mandatory use of ultra-short-acting drugs, which makes anesthesia more manageable. The hospital adds that during the operation, doctors combined many modern techniques, thanks to which it was possible to successfully remove the neoplasm. During the main stage, when Dasha was conscious, she described the pictures she saw in front of her. The next day, Dasha was transferred to a regular ward. “This is the second such operation performed on a child in Ukraine,” Okhmatdyta adds. Earlier, we reported that for the first time in the history of Ukrainian medicine, Lviv doctors performed an operation on the child’s brain with awakening.
