Les Kurbas Theater Award: the names of the candidates have been announced

The State Agency of Ukraine for Arts has published a list of directors and their performances that will compete for the Les Kurbas Theater Award. This year, 17 directors are applying for it.
This was reported on December 15 by the State Ministry of Arts.
The Les Kurbas Theater Award is awarded to professional theater directors for a significant contribution to the development of modern Ukrainian theater art.

The laureate is determined according to the following criteria: artistic search, innovative character, European context and stage experiment. However, no clarifications regarding these criteria were noted on the website.

A play premiered in 2023 is nominated for the award. The prize money for the winner is 20 thousand hryvnias.
List of candidates for the Les Kurbas Award:
- Bylyts Igor – a performance “Dotsia” (National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska);
- Volodymyr Bohdanets – a performance “Big Dream of a Little Christmas Tree” (Volyn Academic Regional Puppet Theater);
- Oleksandr Borovenskyi – a performance “Yanorm” (Kyiv Chamber Theater “Strange Castle”);
- Bulyuk (Korobeinyk) Polina – a performance “Ja-la-pee-ta” (Odesa Theater of the Young Spectator named after Yury Olesha);
- Whisker Artem – a performance “Rainbow on Saltivka” (GO “Art Dot”);
- Oleksiy Gladushevsky – a performance “Green corridors” (CEO “Center of Modern Ukrainian Drama”);
- Dmytro Zahozhenko – a performance “One day” (Lviv Academic Drama Theater named after Lesya Ukrainka);
- Alexander Kravchenko – a performance “Probabilities” (GO “Kyiv Theater-Studio Veritas”);
- Kryvets Boris – a performance “Vasok Go!” (Khmelnytskyi Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater named after M. Starytskyi);
- Anatoly Levchenko – a performance “I” (Kirovohrad Academic Regional Puppet Theater);
- Pavlyuk Serhiy – a performance “Prohibited” (Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater named after M. Kulish);
- Mr. Nazarii – a performance “Wolf” (Ivano-Frankivsk National Academic Drama Theater named after Ivan Franko);
- Davyd Petrosyan – a performance “Earth” (National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater named after Maria Zankovetska);
- Stanislav Sadakliev – a performance “Rhinoceros” (Cherkasy Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater named after T.G. Shevchenko);
- Dmitry Tatarinov – a performance “Var-Sava” (Ternopil Regional Academic Theater of Actors and Dolls);
- Khramtsov Yevhen – a performance “Stolen Happiness” (Lesia Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theater);
- Kateryna Chepura – a performance “The fox Nikita” (Kyiv Academic Theater of the Young Spectator on Lypki).
Why was the prize not awarded in 2023?
The decision not to award the Les Kurbas Theater Award was made by the Award Committee at a meeting on February 8, 2023. That year, the State Arts Council received 21 applications from directors.
The Committee explained that they allegedly did not find works that could claim this distinction.
“The award named after Les Kurbas is not the contribution of one or another director to the development of stage art in Ukraine, but a specific performance submitted by him to the competition. Unfortunately, in the opinion of the majority of the Committee members, this year there were no works that perfectly met the criteria specified in the Les Kurbas Award“, said the head of the Committee, a theater critic Sergey Vasiliev.

He specified that the presented performance should have a “searching, innovative character, features of an experiment and resonate with the trends of the modern European scene.”
Les Kurbas Award was founded in 1995 by the Ministry of Culture and the Union of Theater Actors of Ukraine in honor of the Ukrainian director, actor, theater theorist, playwright Les Kurbas. It was awarded once every two years before Kurbas’s birthday – February 25. And already in 1997, it was made annual.
The first laureate of the prize in 1996 was the artistic director, director and only actor of the One Actor Theater “Scream” Mykhailo Melnyk. Last year, director Tamara Trunova won the award for the play “The House”.
