In Lviv, for the first time in Ukraine, skin was transplanted from a posthumous donor to a one-year-old child who received 25% burns. The story of the rescue of little Andrii was told in the First Medical Association of Lviv. The boy spilled boiling water on himself when his mother was distracted by cooking. “The child pulled the kettle by the wire and poured boiling water over himself. The child was immediately taken to the hospital’s burn unit,” the doctors said. Little Andriyko with his mother and medical staff. Photo: The first medical association of Lviv. The team of anesthesiologists tried all night to stabilize the condition of the one-year-old child. Despite the fact that the doctors managed to do this, the boy’s skin was so affected by burns in some places that it would no longer be able to recover on its own, the medical association adds. As a result, burn surgeons transplanted Andriykov’s skin from a posthumous donor. This method has long been used by doctors abroad, but this case is the first in Ukraine. Lviv doctors have been preparing for this step for several years. The process of donor skin transplant surgery. After removing the upper affected tissue fragments, burn surgeons closed the boy’s wounds with donor skin. It takes root, and can stay on the patient’s body for up to several weeks. They added that several weeks after the operation, Andriyko was ready for the next step – closing the wound with his own skin. The First Medical Association said that the boy is already at home. Now the most important task for parents is to do special exercises with Andriyk to slow down the growth of scars. “Donor skin has a number of advantages compared to synthetic substitutes and helps prepare the wound for closure with one’s own skin. In the USA, for example, donor skin has been used for treatment for about 40 years since 1984. Unfortunately, this technology was not available in Ukraine before.” , – noted Viktor Lyashko, Minister of Health of Ukraine.
