“By presenting the works of Ukrainian artists alongside recognized artists of Ukrainian origin and well-known foreign artists, we hope to bring to the fore the Ukrainian perspective on global issues and challenges. The inclusion of Ukrainian discourse in the vibrant art scene of New York is a great opportunity to contribute to the artistic dialogue on a global level“, said the head of the “Visual Art” department of the Ukrainian Institute, Anastasia Manulyak.
Graphics, paintings, sculptures and three-dimensional installations are presented in the exposition. There are also photo and video installations.

Spectators are greeted by unusual and whimsical creatures: Nikita Kadan’s painting “Siren” shows the temptation of death, and Slinko’s “Dancing Debris” seems to form personified images in the destruction of war.

Mystkini Maria Kulikovska and Ksenia Hnilytska explore the feeling of alienation caused by the war. They reflect on their nomadism and attempts to become “their own islands”. Terrence Musekiwa and Javier Robles de Medina reflect on colonial subjectivities and their manifestations in their sculptures.

The third manifestation of State of Emergence
Since the opening of the exhibition on October 21, lectures and performances by participating artists have been held within the project. The next performances will take place on November 24. Among them, in particular, an essayistic conversation “Death and humor”with the artist Slinko and a performative presentation of the magazine Palliative Turn with Olav Westphalen.
This is the third presentation of the project State of Emergency. The first exhibition opened in Bucharest, exactly 50 days after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. It collected the first impressions and experiences of 30 artists. They showed their emotions and the mechanisms with which they tried to overcome difficulties.
