On April 11, the Verkhovna Rada passed a general resolution law on mobilization. He lowers the conscription age, introduces electronic accounts of conscripts and introduces basic military training instead of conscription. In addition, in law it’s about conditions conscription of women to the army.

Under what conditions can women be mobilized?

Ukrainian women can be called up to serve in the army only by voluntary consent.

However, all women who have won must register for military service medical or pharmaceutical specialty. They include female doctors aged 18 to 60, who will be determined to be fit for service based on their health status. At the same time, military accounting does not mean mandatory mobilization of women.

By by law on mobilization, women who are on the military register can also be called up for service during martial law only voluntarily.

And in peacetime, such women can go to military service or reserve service only voluntarily – under a contract.

Women can be mobilized only at will

Women, who have an education related to the military accounting specialty, from the list approved by the Ministry of Defense, do not necessarily have to register for military service. They can also do it voluntarily.

The law also refers to gender equality in the military. It provides that women perform military duty on an equal footing with men, are accepted for contract service under the same conditions, are called up and undergo military service.

Is basic military service mandatory for women?

According to the law on mobilization, men between the ages of 18 and 25 must pass basic military service. This is military training, which will last 3 months in wartime. Those who have completed the training will not be called up during mobilization until they reach the age of 25.

Women can also undergo basic military training, but only voluntarily.

For this, they, like men, must be fit in terms of health and reach the age of 18 to 25 years.

Both men and women can choose the year when they will undergo basic military service.

Who is not subject to conscription?

Will not be able to mobilize or are released from service after joining it:

  • women in connection with pregnancy;
  • women on maternity leave;
  • wives, if both spouses are in military service and have a child under the age of 18;
  • women and men who are raising three or more children under the age of 18 (if they do not have arrears with the payment of alimony for more than three months);
  • women and men who have a child under the age of 18, if one of the parents has died, has been deprived of parental rights, is recognized as missing or is behind bars;
  • female and male guardians or adoptive parents raising a child with a disability under the age of 18. Or if the child is an adult with the I or II disability group;
  • women and men raising a child up to 18 years old, suffering from severe damage to the nervous system, with severe congenital malformations, oncology, paralysis, severe mental disorders, type I diabetes, acute kidney diseases;
  • adoptive parents who support a child under the age of 18 who was an orphan before that;
  • women and men who have a child under the age of 18 and a spouse who is serving in the military;
  • those who have a spouse with a disability of groups I or II;
  • those who have a spouse with a disability of the III group, which he (she) received by losing limbs, hands, feet, one of the paired organs, who has oncology or mental disabilities;
  • those who have one of their parents with a disability of groups I or II or whose one of the parents of the husband (wife) has a disability of groups I or II (if there are no more non-military servicemen who can take care of them);
  • if close relatives died or went missing during the anti-terrorist operation or participation in hostilities during martial law;
  • if close relatives were awarded the title “Hero of Ukraine”.

In addition, reserved employees, full-time professional vocational pre-university and higher education graduates, doctoral students on interns are not eligible for the prize.
