The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has changed the dates of public holidays, in particular Christmas and Defender’s Day. People’s deputies Yaroslav Zheleznyak and Iryna Gerashchenko report this. Christmas was moved to December 25 (instead of January 7). The Day of Ukrainian Statehood will be celebrated on July 15 (it was July 28). On this day, the memory of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles prince of Kyiv Volodymyr the Great is commemorated. The purpose of the draft law is “renunciation of the Russian heritage”: the law was supported by 241 deputies in total. The Day of Defenders of Ukraine is moved to October 1 (from October 14), because this holiday is connected with the Ukrainian military traditions of commemorating the Day of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. Parliament supported the Law on Amendments to Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine regarding the transition of public holidays according to the New Julian church calendar. “This law will be signed after July 28, so the Day of Ukrainian Statehood will be July 28 this month,” Yaroslav Zhelezniak said. The purpose of the draft law is “abandonment of the Russian heritage”: the law was supported by 241 deputies in total. As a reminder, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine will switch to the New Julian calendar for fixed holidays from September 1, 2023.
