Hanna from Mariupol is a doctor, pediatrician-neonatologist and the same age as Ukraine’s independence. She was the only doctor in a bomb shelter with hundreds of people, where she treated children without water or medicine to the sound of explosions. On the eve of Independence Day, the Ministry of Health told the story of an indomitable doctor who was able to survive in Mariupol and return to work in the territories controlled by Ukraine. “On February 24, Hanna and her husband woke up to a loud noise, but the couple found out about the start of the war only a few hours later. The husband, who had gone to work, was miraculously saved – he closed the shop and returned home, and two hours later a projectile hit the shop,” they say. Ministry of Health The next day, Hanna was on duty. After waiting for the shelling to subside, she ran to the delivery room. For half a day, the woman worked as usual, and then she and her colleagues began to furnish the basement of the hospital. This is how the first shift in wartime passed. On the way, a friend called the woman and jokingly asked if she was pregnant, as was the case at the beginning of the war in the distant 2014. There were no signs, but Hanna decided to test. It turned out that she was indeed pregnant,” the woman recalls. Store shelves in the city were empty. One day, as a result of shelling, the neighbor’s balcony was blown down, and later the woman saw a rocket fall into the sea. Since then, the family has moved into a common corridor. The water supply stopped, the electricity and gas went out after arriving at a neighboring house. The woman could no longer go to work, and on March 3, the Russians hit her house: the first two floors caught fire, but the neighbors managed to put out the fire. The next day, the family managed to contact relatives, who told them about the evacuation on March 5. It took twenty minutes to walk to the assembly point, but the family did not get there because of shelling. The Ministry of Health says that this saved their lives, because the Russians completely destroyed the square where people gathered. It was not possible to evacuate that time, but the Ukrainian military took people to a confectionery factory in the center of Mariupol. It turned out that Hanna is the only doctor in the vault. “Everybody started getting intestinal infections. We had medicine, but no syringes. I had to sterilize the disposable ones. It was a wash under some water that we could find: rain or snow. Then we would fill those syringes with vodka to at least somehow to sterilize, so it was possible to provide help to people. We survived,” Hanna recalls. There was also an autistic boy in the vault who was having seizures but didn’t have the medication he needed. “When four-month-old Yegorchyk fell ill, I advised his parents to go to hospital No. 3, because I had nothing to help them. This is a hospital that had a maternity ward, which everyone has heard about now… They went, and the next day the hospital was hit. Thank God, they survived and came to us. On foot. Ira, Yegor’s mother, had just crossed the threshold and lost consciousness. When she opened her eyes, the first thing she said was: “Have you ever seen pregnant mothers without arms and legs ? Anya, you have no idea what is happening there. Dead children lie there. It’s scary,” the doctor recalls the conversation. Then older children started to get sick, and later adults. Medicines ran out, and it was necessary to choose who to give them to. Anna gave medicine to young people and children. Older people began to die – two men died in one day. She did not know if there would be enough food and water for everyone. Then the Russians dropped an aerial bomb on the drama theater, and some people from there came to them to the storage room – to the nearby basement. “It was all scary to look at. We are somehow used to shelling here. But we did not have so many wounded, and there was not so much grief. And they saw a lot of grief. They came with injuries and each one passed through me. There was one woman who was saved by a down jacket. She had a very thick black down jacket, and one piece of shrapnel got stuck in her back,” says the doctor. According to her, only those who had a car could escape from hell. Once, the guys from the shelter spent several days repairing a bus in which the radiator exploded , and they succeeded. Hanna and her fellow travelers passed 25 enemy checkpoints. The Russians stopped the bus at each of them, all the men were taken out, sometimes they undressed. Instead of 3.5 hours, the journey took 12. After arriving in the Lviv region, Hanna immediately got a job as a neonatologist . She gave birth to her second son in the same hospital, and is currently on maternity leave. “I dream that I will be able to get to my city someday. Feel the waves of the sea. I am glad that all my relatives were able to get out of this hell. I wish everyone peace and a speedy victory. Take care, our life is one and it is priceless. Never give up,” the woman urges.
