Only 9% of Ukrainians communicate exclusively in Russian – survey

Almost 60% of Ukrainians communicate exclusively in Ukrainian, but there remain 9% of citizens who use exclusively Russian. This is evidenced by the survey data of the “Rating” sociological group, which was conducted on August 16-20, 2023. According to the survey, 59% of respondents use Ukrainian in their daily lives, and another 31% of Ukrainians use Ukrainian and Russian. Only 9% of survey participants named Russian as their main language at home. At the same time, 82% of respondents consider Ukrainian their native language, 16% – Russian. For comparison, in July 2012, only 41% of Ukrainians used Ukrainian, and 37% used Russian. By the way, IDPs and refugees staying abroad often use both languages for communication or speak Russian. However, more than 70% of IDPs and refugees consider Ukrainian to be their native language. Respondents were invited to complete the survey through messengers and social networks. A total of 6,050 people took part, including 700 IDPs and 750 refugees from Ukraine. We will remind, according to the survey, Ukrainians most often feel pride and fear when thinking about Ukraine.
