The fact that penguins manage to reproduce well, according to scientists, is precisely evidence of the effectiveness of such a strategy: it allows them to get the amount of sleep necessary for life.
“These penguins have the appearance of sleepy drivers who blink, close and open their eyes, and do so around the clock for weeks on end.” – says study co-author Nils Rattenborg from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence.
Antarctic penguins usually lay their eggs in their nests in November. Married couples share parenting duties: one parent sits in the nest for several days in a row, while the other partner feeds the family.
